Carla España is a Bilingual literacy consultant, researcher, writer, and speaker
Carla España teaches in-service and pre-service teachers in the Bilingual Program at Hunter College, School of Education. She has taught Bilingual Education Foundations, Bilingual Literacy, and Multicultural Education courses in this program. Outside of this program, Carla has taught undergraduate students in the QUEST program (Literacy Across the Content Areas) and graduate students in the Literacy program (Literacy Research for Change).
Carla collaborates with schools across New York City through partnerships for student teachers. Carla also partners with teachers in East Harlem, NYC for the Read East Harlem project, co-planning and co-teaching in K-2 settings.
Carla has facilitated literacy curriculum planning and lesson demonstrations with K-12 staff in New York City public schools, international schools in Bogotá, Colombia and Santiago, Chile and across different states in the United States through Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. She has worked with educators in Guadalajara, Mexico and international educators in South Asian schools.
Her research interests include bilingual education, translanguaging, culturally sustaining pedagogies, arts integration, Latinx education, teaching for social justice, curriculum development, and teacher preparation.
